Not a vast amount of golfing experience, although a frequent visitor
to Portugal for family holidays. Always keen to slip away from the
beach for sneak looks at the golf courses especially Quinta do Lago
where we were staying and Vale de Lobo where I first took to the
fairways. Additionally, I have previewed the hotel and course of Le
Meridien Penina in the company of my brother-in –law, who was an
acquaintance of the great Henry Cotton, and was mightily impressed
with the whole golf complex. To have the opportunity to take up the
prize and stay and play at this magnificent location is most exciting.
The Algarve is just a fantastic place for golf with a reliable
climate, beautiful scenery and wonderfully designed courses. The
various challenges of the Vilamoura complex await as the next
destination on the Portuguese hit last later this month.

I have been visiting the Algarve for 15 years now and the improvement
in availability and quality of golf is incredible. From the more
mature courses such as Penina and the Old Course, Vilamoura to the
more recent gems of Quinta do Vale and Monte Rei, all courses offer
something for all standards of golfers. They are all maintained to
such a fantastic standard as well. It is for this reason that my
friends and I now have our annual tournament in the Algarve in June
and have done for the last 4 years. Long may it continue!

This was our first golfing trip to the Algarve,

with a variety of challengers on each course. Booking the golf on line

reached the courses when we received a very friendly welcome. We would
recommend AGC to any of our friends when golfing in Portugal and look
forward to returning as often as possible.

I have been going to Portugal through AGC for many
years now. The weathers perfect, and the courses are excellent, and are
a true test of golf for both low and high handicappers alike. Initially
went to the Vilamoura area, but now go to the eastern Algarve where
courses are quieter and in great condition. Quinta da Ria and Cima are
great and if you can afford to splash the cash Monte Rei is a must.

I have been going to Portugal on a golfing week for at
least the last six years, usually in late winter or early spring. After
discovering Tavira one summer over 15 years ago. We have not been
disappointed with the golf courses near Tavira - quite the contrary. Our
favourites are the Quinta da Ria (with breath-taking glimpses of the sea)
and Quinta da Cima but we also appreciate Castro Marim, Benamor and even
Quinta do Vale although we find it very challenging due to all the water
hazards. It is also very exposed to the wind which, moreover, always seem
to be unusually powerful for some strange reason. The conditions of the
courses, especially Ria and Cima, are excellent and it is a real pleasure
to play on them.
A final note on the hospitality of the Algarve
people : exceptionally warm! Everyone speaks at least English and very
often French and Spanish as well and they are cheerful, hard working and
out to please. The food is truly excellent, especially the seafood. Our
favourite dish is "arroz de marisco", but the fish in general
is abundant, always very fresh and well prepared.

courses as possible in Holland and abroad. When we are visiting our
house in the Algarve, I always like to play Silves, Castro Marim and
Pine Cliffs, and love the challenges that Quinta do Vale offers.
AGC has made it easily possible for me to book these courses up-front
for good prices and sometimes even including special offers! Until
now I have always received a quick response and great service. This
is a perfect way for me to plan our holidays and making sure we can
always play our favourite courses!

I have visited the Algarve many times over the years, not only to
play golf but also to enjoy the excellent facilities for families. A
group of friends and I used to go on an annual golfing long weekend
to La Manga in Spain but I suggested that we switch our allegiance
to Vilamoura last year. Based on this favourable experience, we
immediately booked a return trip this year to the same resort where
we can play three rounds at three different courses whilst being in
familiar surroundings. On this basis, given the number of high
quality courses within easy reach we can (with Algarve Golf’s help
of course…) continue coming back for many years and still get a
fresh experience every time! What I particularly like about the
majority of the courses on the Algarve is the people that work there
and the warmth of the welcome.

My first rounds of golf in Portugal were on a
then very dry, hot Estoril Course in the summers of 1962 and 1965 – it had
no fairway irrigation then! Lots of run, but difficult to hold the fairways.
In '62, I also visited the Algarve – well before its 1st course Penina
opened (1966), although I played there in 1970, as well as at the only
Vilamoura course then – now the Oceânico Old Course.
In '72, I was part of a Luanda (Angola) G.C. team that played in the
Portuguese inter-club championship on the 9-hole Miramar links, near Oporto.
Although used to playing on 'browns' - instead of greens - in Angola, we
were not last (only 2nd last!), after having a practice round at the
historical Oporto course.
Over the last 18 years I've been fortunate to play most of Portugal's fine
courses including those in Madeira and the Azores Islands. My one and only
hole-in-one so far, in over 60 years of trying, was on the 8th at Palmares,
near Lagos.

The lads and me were back in the Algarve for our second golfing
tour. This time we played Parque da Floresta, Pinta, Boavista
and Salgados. Having played Floresta previously it again did
not let us down, with such a variety of holes to test your golf
in different ways. My personal favourite was Pinta (mainly
because I won the round that day), being a challenging and
quite a scenic course.
Boavista was fun and is certainly a good course for those of you
(like me that don't hit the ball too far), the par 5's were down
hill! But then again the par 3 fifth is a good wood over the
ravine. Salgados is an excellent course, but is a nightmare if
you are wayward with any of your shots, normally ending up in
the water. Overall again a good tour and now in the process of
planning this years trip.

We discovered the Algarve in 1987. Overwhelmed by its beauty we soon
decided to buy a vacation home there and changed our sport from tennis
to Golf and play any course in the Algarve. Only San Lorenzo is missing
from my list and I may use the voucher to play there. The big advantage
in the Algarve is the wide variety of courses. From the always windy
technical Parque da Floresta, over the nature reserve of Morgado, or up
to the beautiful courses in Quinta do Lago - the variety is unique. I
actually prefer the time early in December for a ten day golf tour with
friends. Is there anything better in life as to play in pure sunshine,
on December 10 with an outside temperature of 18 degrees and the outlook
at the ninetieth hole to a "caneca" of Sagres and a
"medronho". Is there anything better .... tell me!

was fun playing in the Algarve.
