International News

Koumei Oda produced an excellent final round performance to win the Casio World Open on the Japan Golf Tour at Kochi Kuroshio Country Club. Starting the day in a three-way tie for the lead with Ryo Ishikawa and Shigeki Murayama, Oda had seven birdies in 10 holes starting from the sixth and finished with a seven-under-par 65. His 21-under-par total left him three ahead of Ishikawa whose four-under 68 contained six birdies and two bogeys. Tetsuji Hiratsuka finished third on 16-under-par 272. Oda's win moved up to World Number 76, an improvement of 39 places.

Jim Furyk ended more than two years without a victory when he holed key putts on the final two holes for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory from Graeme McDowell in the Chevron World Challenge. Furyk finished at 13-under 275 and McDowell needed to hole out from the fairway to force a playoff, which he nearly achieved, instead settling for a birdie and at 70 and second-place. Furyk jumps back into the World Top 10, after an absence of just two weeks, to Nš 6, while McDowell secured a place in the 2010 Masters Tournament with a return to the World Top 50 at Nš.38.

Adam Scott returned to the winners circle with victory the Australian Open for his first pro victory in his home country, shooting an even-par 72 on the Sunday to beat Stuart Appleby by five strokes finishing at 15-under 273 at New South Wales Golf Club. Having recently dropped out of the World's Top 50 for the first time in nearly seven years the former World Number Nš 3 improved 20 places to Nš 34.

Australian Robert Allenby ended four years without a win in South Africa and in doing so improved further his incredible play-off record which now stands at 11 wins out of 12 attempts. Allenby beat defending champion Henrik Stenson at the third extra hole of the Nedbank Challenge at Sun City after the pair had both finished on the 11-under-par. Allenby climbed 4 positions to Nš 26 while Stenson moved in front of Paul Casey to retain his Nš 7 place.

Shigeki Maruyama from Japan beat Kim Kyung-Tae from Korea in a sudden death play-off to win the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup, the final event of the 2009 Japan Golf Tour. The win takes Maruyama to Nš 129 and a jump of 75 places. Chinese Taipei's Chan Yih-shin rounded off the Asian Tour season in style by winning a three-way King's Cup play-off for his maiden victory on the circuit. The 32-year-old shot a final-round two-under-par 70 in regulation play to finish 14 under overall alongside England's Nick Redfern and Scotsman Simon Yates. Chan climbed to World Nš335.

Robert Allenby won the Australian PGA Championship for a fourth time as he cruised to his second win in as many weeks by four shots from John Senden and Scott Strange. He added to his victories of 2000, 2001 and 2005 by shooting a second-straight five-under-par 66 to finish at 14 under at Hyatt Regency, Coolum. This win comes a week after Allenby ended a four-year title drought at the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa in a play-off. He climbed to Nš 21, an improvement of 5 places. Spaniard Pablo Martin won the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa two years after becoming the first amateur to win on The European Tour. The 23 year old is now the only player to capture titles both as an amateur and a professional. The win moveed Martin up 212 places to World Number 276.

Three years after becoming the first Scot to win the US Amateur Championship in 108 years, Richie Ramsay now has his first European Tour title. The 25 year old from Aberdeen won the South African Open Championship at Pearl Valley Golf Estates, coming from five behind with a best of the day 65 and then beating Indian Shiv Kapur with a birdie on the first play-off hole. The pair tied on the 13 under par mark of 275 but the former Walker Cup player grabbed the first prize - and a European Tour exemption that runs until the end of 2011 - when he was on the green in two at the 601 yard 18th and two putted. The final Official World Ranking of 2009 sees Ramsay at World Number 117 a jump of 123 places. Another past US Amateur Champion Edoardo Molinari finished in tied 4th place to join his brother Francesco in the World Top 50 and earned a return visit to Augusta in April 2010.
