Welcome to the January 2010 edition of "Golf in Portugal" Newsletter

 

The "LUCKY GOLFER" prize

 


Each month 10 names are randomly selected from all golfers that have used our online Booking Form. From these 10 golfers a second draw is made for the winner of the prize sponsored by Hotel Le Meridien Hotel Penina ***** and Golf Course, and Dona Filipa Hotel ***** & San Lorenzo Golf Course in the Algarve. The monthly prize includes a standard "weekend break accommodation" with breakfast for two in the Hotel specified, together with a round of golf for two guests on the course attached to the Hotel.

All of the 10 golfers of each month will be listed in our Newsletter and notified by separate e-mail. The nominated golfers who were drawn for the month of January are listed below.

Australian Geoff Ogilvy shot a final-round 67 at the par-73 Kapalua Resort Plantation Course to successfully defend his title at the season-opening SBS Championship from South Africa's Rory Sabbatini who finished a shot behind. American Matt Kuchar was third of the 28-man field consisting of the previous year's PGA Tour event winners with compatriot Sean O'Hair in a tie for fourth place with Scotland's Martin Laird. Ogilvy moveed back into the World's Top 10 with a 5 spot jump to ninth while Sabbatini and Kuchar along with Ryan Moore, who finished 6th, all climb into the World Top 50.

Charl Schwartzel claimed his fourth European Tour title after his final round of 67 which was good enough to help him secure the Africa Open in East London. The South African as the highest World Ranked player in the field ended with a total of 272 - 20 under par overall - to edge out joint-overnight leader Thomas Aiken by a stroke. The win took Schwartzel to the fringes of the World Top 50 with a 15 spot leap to Nš 51.

Ryan Palmer landed the third PGA Tour title of his career when he won the Sony Open in Honolulu by a stroke from Robert Allenby. Palmer jumped 190 places in the Ranking to Nš 92. Charl Schwartzel won his second straight Sunshine Tour - European Tour co-sanctioned tournament when he claimed the Johannesburg Open by an impressive six strokes and jumped 16 spots to World Nš 35.

 
Martin Kaymer jumped to a career high at Nš 6 with a victory at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and the second placed Ian Poulter broke into the Top 10 for the first time as he moved to 10th. Bill Haas birdied the final hole to win the weather delayed Bob Hope Classic by a single stroke from Matt Kuchar, Bubba Watson and Tim Clark. Haas jumped 88 places in the Ranking to Nš 112.

Robert Karlsson won the Commercialbank Qatar Masters presented by Dolphin Energy by three strokes from defending champion Alvaro Quiros. Karlsson missed the middle of the 2009 season with an eye injury but the win placed him on track for a third successive Ryder Cup appearance. The victory at Doha has also took Karlsson back into the World Top 20 as he climbed 14 places to World Nš 17.

Ben Crane closed with a 2-under 70 for a one-shot victory at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Crane parred the final hole to win by a stroke from Michael Sim, Brandt Snedeker and Marc Leishman. The win took Crane to 56th in the Ranking, a jump of 53 places.

American Robert Gates claimed the Australasian Tour co-sanctioned 2010 Michael Hill New Zealand Open by one shot from Australian Andrew Dodt and became the 13th player in Nationwide Tour history to be victorious in his first event. Gates jumped to World Number 366.
