International News

American Steve Stricker claimed a two-shot win at the Northern Trust Open over Englishman Luke Donald at the Riviera Country Club. Stricker began the final round with a six stroke lead but was immediately put under pressure by Luke Donald who opened with three birdies in the first five holes. Stricker responded with three birdies of his own around the turn and finished with a round of 70 to Donald's 66. The win took Steve Stricker to World Number Nº 2, the position he held for three weeks in September last year.

Miguel Angel Jiménez courageously edged out European Nº 1 Lee Westwood on the third play-off hole to win the Omega Dubai Desert Classic following a thrilling final day at the Emirates Golf Club. The pair had both shot final rounds of 72 to edge out fellow overnight leader Thongchai Jaidee. The win took Jiménez comfortably back into the World Top 50 with a 30 place jump to Nº 30. This week's other winners were Jim Herman at the Moonah Classic co-sanctioned by the Australasia & Nationwide Tours and Gaganjeet Bhullar at the Asian Tour International on the Asian Tour.

Dustin Johnson successfully defended his AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am with a birdie on the final hole to claim a one stroke victory over David Duval and JB Holmes. Johnson, who led from day one, holed out from around four feet for a round of 74 to clinch his second success on the famous Californian course and third of his career. Johnson broke into the World Top 50 last week with a tied third finish in Los Angeles and climbed a further 19 positions in the Ranking to Nº 25.

Australia’s Andrew Dodt won the inaugural Avantha Masters at the DLF Golf and Country Club after carding a final round four-under-par 68 for a total of 14-under-par 274. A sublime bunker shot on the final hole helped Dodt secure a birdie and win his maiden Asian Tour title by a single shot ahead of England’s Richard Finch who closed with a 66 to take second place on 275. The victory took Dodt to Number 110 with an improvement of 85 places.

Darren Fichardt launched a 239-yard three-iron over some intervening trees and the water surrounding the 18th green to set up a birdie on the final hole for a one-stroke victory in the R3-million Dimension Data Pro-Am. He carded a four-under 68 on the Montagu course at Fancourt to draw away from Branden Grace who shared the lead with him after the third round. Louis Oosthuizen finished second having posted a six-under 66 to set the target for Fichardt. Fichardt jumped 124 spots to Nº 200.

Hunter Mahan produced a flawless round for the second consecutive day to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open by a single stroke from rising talent Rickie Fowler. Hunter Mahan made his move on the back nine with a pair of birdies and an eagle on the par-five 13th. After Fowler missed a birdie putt on the last the 27-year-old's second career PGA Tour title was assured. The win took Mahan to Nº 22 with an improvement of 11 places.

That week's other winners were Fran Quinn at the Panama Claro Championship on the Nationwide Tour and Hennie Otto at the Vodacom Championship on the Sunshine Tour.
